How Shall The Young Secure Their Hearts

Intro: This title is inspired by the Isaac Watts Song. Which refers to ps. 119:9. God's word provides the guidance and strength so badly needed by young people.


  1. Here's what's going on in our country today:
    1. Drugs and Alcohol.
      1. 8th 30% 10th 45% 12th 53% use alcohol.
      2. 32% of teenagers report having been drunk in last 30 days.
      3. 30,400 annual deaths involving drugs & alc. (mostly auto)
    2. Sexual Immorality
      1. 5,000,000 teenagers contract STD's each year.
      2. If Drugs/Sex/R&R is living then why is the next problem more prevalent among those involved with them?
    3. Suicide - The 3rd leading cause of death among teenagers.
      1. A wealthy/popular college student took his life several years ago. He left a note, "I'm sick & tired of having so much fun."
      2. Like Kurt Cobain or Anna N. Smith - he had all the money, sex & drugs you could want - and was miserable.


  2. How shall the young secure their hearts and guard their lives from sin? What particular advice does scripture give you to avoid these problems?
    1. Remember Who's You Are - Eccl. 11:9-12:1a
      1. You have been bought w/ price.
      2. Gen 39:7-13
      3. Rom 12:1
        1. World wants you to look/talk/act in a worldly way.
        2. I don't care if your: pretty, rich, popular, cool - I want you to be like Christ!


    2. Honor Your Parents - Eph 6:1-3
      1. Love & Appreciate for who they are and what they've done.
      2. Acknowledge their superior wisdom.
      3. Do what they say, when they say, w/ good attitude.


    3. Love People not things instead of Loving Things & using people.
      1. Love everyone:
        1. Elderly, young, unpopular,
        2. Love doesn't mean ignoring people
          1. hate isn't opposite of love.
          2. apathy is the opposite of love.
        3. Sometimes the loneliest place in the world is in a group of people who don't take notice of your presence.
      2. Jesus loved people - He loved the little people.


    4. Be Careful Who You hang out with - ICor. 15:33 "Be not deceived, evil companions..."
      1. Peter - "Lord, I'll never deny you..."
      2. I know this problem personally
        1. I've not always spent my spare time in elders meetings.
        2. grew up w/ no church kids.
        3. When I finally did, it made a huge difference.


    5. Know That Actions Have Consequences - Gal. 6:7-8 "Be not deceived, for whatever a man sows that shall he reap."
        1. Prov. 13:15 - The way of the transgressor is hard.
        2. Sin carries two kinds of consequences:
          1. Temporal
            1. alcoholism
            2. stds. etc.
          2. Eternal
            1. Ezek. 18:20 "The soul that sins..."
            2. Rev. 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and adulterers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
          3. king needed new chariot driver. took candidates to a precarious mt. pass. how close could you get wheels to edge? 6", 3", far away from edge as possible.

          4. Concl: Story of father, son, faith, hope, love, time.
