Mistakes of Peter

If you missed Sunday morning's sermon, check it out here…

http://www.lostriverchurch.org/media/sermons/2016/04/24/mistakes-of-peter

Bro Ward reminded us of Peter’s mistakes to help us give consideration to our own lives:

  1. Arrogance. “Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away” (Matt 26:33). Pride is such a deceptive vice. The tragic stories of great men falling are recorded to wake us up before it is too late. Perhaps you are at a point in your life where the little voice in your head telling you that everything is okay has drowned out the little voice telling you that only Jesus can make everything okay.
  2. Too far from Jesus. “And Peter was following him at a distance” (Matt 26:58a). We know we are too far from Jesus when His Word becomes burdensome to us. There are times in our lives when we don’t have any interest in getting together with other Christians for study and worship. Maybe this rings true for you? Don’t delay… “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded” (James 4:8).

God of gods

Our God is the God of gods.

It says in: Deuteronomy 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

This verse reminds us of the supremacy and incorruptibility of our God. He is...
God of gods - above all spiritual forces in unseen realms.
Lord of lords - master of all earthly powers.
He is great, mighty and awesome - if we are not in awe, it is because we fail to see.
Impartial and incorruptible - God cannot be bribed or turned away from doing what is right.

we are to live our lives in view of this reality. God is to be the sun in our solar system, not one of the planets circling us. Our going out and coming in, our speaking, doing, thinking, feeling is to always find its center in Him.

God Is Merciful & Compassionate

In Lamentations 3:22-23 the prophet Jeremiah says, "Through the LORD's mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not.  They are new every morning..."

These well known words are found in one of the most neglected books of the Bible.  Surpassing even Job, for it’s darkness, Jeremiah’s lament describes the devastation of Jerusalem following the Babylonian invasion in (586 BC).

You might expect such a book to be a rambling wail, or disorderd stream of consciousness. Yet, from a literary standpoint, Lamenatations is one of the most highly structured books in the Bible, which raises a question. Why would the saddest book of the Bible also be the most rigorously structured? Perhaps it is God showing us that even when our pain seems purposeless, that He has a purpose, that He is channeling it in such a way as to make it beautiful in His time.

Visit us during the month of September, while we pay special attention to the Mercy and Compassion of our God.

God Is Powerful

There is no power like God's power. All other powers are limited by outside factors. Only God has the power to do whatsoever He pleases. Let this truth increase your reverence for God. Let this truth sustain you when you are tempted to fear some lesser power. Let this truth comfort you when you have reached the end of your own power.

God Is Faithful

Our faithfulness is vital, but it is not the foundation of salvation. That foundation is the faithfulness of God.  It is His faithfulness that gives our faith traction. Because He is faithful, we can respond to Him with faithful and confident living even in the most difficult times. Join us in the month of June while our emphasis is on the Faithfulness of God.

A Jealous God

What comes to mind when you here that our God is a jealous God (Deut 4:24)?  While this is a troubling statement to some, to others it is very reassuring.

God’s jealousy means that God's love for us is passionate and that our love for Him is something He values. If God didn't care if you devoted yourself to other god's, then it would mean He didn't really love you or take you seriously. Imagine a husband who doesn't care if his wife sleeps with other men! We rightly renounce such a man as having no real regard for his wife or his marriage. We would say that he doesn't understand what it means to be married.

But God understands what it means to be our God. His love for us burns jealously and His desire is for us to be devoted to Him with our whole selves. The good news is that His jealousy doesn't come from a sense of His inadequacy, but from His perfect confidence that He, and He alone can truly satisfy us and make us eternally happy.

God Is Peace

Our them for April is: "God is Peace"

Christians who seek God in prayer are promised that peace will replace their anxiety (Phil 4:7).

Our God dwells in peace and gives peace to His people. The peace He gives us is beyond the grasp of the unbelieving mind. Such a mind cannot think higher than itself and has no assurance rooted in the absolute strenght and goodness of God.

Do you know the peace of God?

Elder Panel Discussion on the Home

Three of our Shepherds will be responding to questions about the home and family this Sunday night (March 29th).

Come here them discuss such questions and topics as:

“What would you identify as the most significant threats facing the family today?”

“What have been the most common issues you have seen in marriages that are struggling?”

“What biblical teaching regarding the home do you think is often overlooked?”

“What is the relationship between the church and the home, and how can they best harmonize and support each other?”

“How has God sustained your family when you have encountered trials?”

“How has God used your wife and children to shape your life as a Christian?”

This panel will include Paul Cook, Don Dew, Ken Marshall and Scott Gary.  Nick Dew will moderate the discussion.

Daylight Savings Time Begins This Weekend

Remember to set your clocks forward one hour this Saturday night--March 7.  Daylight Savings Time begins on Sunday, March 8 and you don't want to be late for classes!

God Is Light

Do you want to know God’s will for your life, but everything seems murky and hidden? Do you feel like you are walking through a dark forest at midnight, groping your way along? Would you like to know where the light switch is at? God tells us in 1John 1:5-10.

The light switch is found in first confessing our sin to God. Second, asking His forgiveness. Third, walking in obedience to what He is telling you to do, and above all else He is telling you to love your brothers and sisters.

Are you hiding your sin? Then you walk in darkness.
Are you hating others and wanting them to be punished? Then you walk in darkness.
The darkness gives way to the light, only when you confess your sin to God and forgive others of their sins against you, then you will be in the light as He is in the Light and your way forward will be made clear.

God is...the Source Means and end of all Things

Our theme verse for January is Romans 11:36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever! Amen. Paul is declaring that God is the source, the means and the end of all things.

This means that nothing existed before God. There was no pre-existing material or energy that turned into God. Furthermore, everything that now exists, does so through Him. There are no beings or forces that operate independently of Him. There are no persons, places or things that can continue apart from Him. We are mistaken if we think that God got the universe going, but now it sort of rolls along by itself. For He is before all things and in Him all things hold together (Col 1:17). If the God who spoke creation into existence, were to fall silent, all creation would vanish like the morning mist, for He upholds all things by the power of His word (Heb 1:3).
