Our theme for 2012 is discipleship. For the first part of the year, we are focusing on the importance of TRUST as it relates to discipleship. We will not follow a person we do not trust. Therefore, it is very important that we consider the trustworthiness of Jesus.

I heard of a woman the other day who came from a bad home. She had been abused by every man of any significance in her life and as a result was deeply depressed and terribly paranoid about getting close to any man. She said her life began to change when she learned about Jesus, because He was the first man she had ever met that she felt like she could trust completely.

Men also, need a leader to show them the way. We need to witness the courage, valor, commitment and strength that Jesus demonstrates. He is truly a leader of men, who can inspire us to step up and take responsibility for ourselves and for the lives of those who God places under our care.

Discipleship begins with trusting Jesus. Have you put your trust in Him?

Happy New Year to all! The new year always brings a sense of enthusiasm and hope. This is consistent with a Christian outlook on life. We serve a God who forgives the past and because of this, we can look toward the future without the burdens of our past dragging us down.

This year our theme of special emphasis at Lost River will be "Discipleship." The most important aspect of being a disciple is the question of, "Who is your Leader?" As Christians, we look to Jesus as our leader, our teacher, our lord. This is good news because it means we can follow Him with absolute confidence. He is supremely competent and utterly trustworthy.

Begin the new year by renewing your commitment to follow close in the footsteps of Jesus.

It continues to be a joy to see the congregation here grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. One of the most important responsibilities we have as shepherds is to feed the flock of God. Our continuing desire is to mature in Christ ourselves as we strive to assist all of you in your spiritual development (Ephesians 4:11-16).

We assemble multiple times each week to worship God, to receive His blessings and to encourage each other in the Lord (1 Corinthians chapters 11-14; Hebrews 10:24-25). Some of the things we do when we come together are fixed in scripture, and we are not at liberty to change. There are other matters we are at liberty to do as we believe best serves the general purposes of the assembly. While the elders are determined to continue to maintain the elements of the assembly that God regulates, we are also willing to arrange the things we are at liberty to alter so that the spiritual needs of the church are best served.

In order to help us get a better grasp on how the church might best be edified, we are conducting this survey. We earnestly desire your input and encourage everyone’s prayerful participation. To do the survey on line please click here. The final day to submit your survey will be Wednesday Dec. 14th.

When writing to the Corinthian church, the apostle Paul responded to questions the church had submitted to him. The gospels also record Jesus response to numerous questions people asked Him. What better way to minister to people’s needs than to ask, “What’s on your mind?”

The Lost River leadership recently asked the church to tell us about their toughest challenges in life. We took the 177 answers we received and grouped them into twelve categories. We narrowed that down to five of the most frequently mentioned categories and Lawrence Kelley is preaching lessons on them this Fall.

The topics to be addressed in this series are:

Maintaining my Priorities, Sexually Integrity, Managing My Money, Keeping my Tongue and God’s Silence.

We are grateful to everyone who participated in the survey and pray that God will use this series of lessons to glorify Himself and to bless all of us.

One of God’s purposes for the church is to break down dividing walls and form one new humanity (Eph 2:14-22). The new race that God has established in our world is not marked by color, gender, or age, but by faith. The new race of humanity that God is forming is simply the Christian race. However, it is easy for us to forget this and form cliques and sects. One of our goals as a church is to overcome division everywhere it tries to intrude itself. One of the places this can happen is between College students and the permanent members of the congregation. So, as the annual influx of new students begins, we offer a double exhortation.

To the students: Work hard to break out of your circle of fellow students. Get to know the families in the church; look for opportunities to serve them, as well as to be served by them. This will not come naturally. It’s the easiest and most comfortable thing in the world for students to keep company only with students. Don’t let that happen. You will benefit greatly from the stability and accountability that relationships with established families provide.

And to the families: Welcome students into your lives and homes, look for opportunities to serve them and show them hospitality. Don’t let them stay in their comfortable circle of fellow students. Break out of your circle, and break into theirs. You will benefit greatly from their freshness and enthusiasm.

Having recently appointed additional elders to help shepherd the flock at Lost River, we are not engaged in the process of appointing more deacons. The names of several good men have been submitted and will soon be announced to the church for consideration. The elders ask for everyone to be in prayer that God would be glorified in this process, and that men would be appointed who will be earnest in helping the work of the Lord to move forward at Lost River.

The New Testament tells us that each church is to have its own leaders. The scriptures use three terms to describe the same office: elders, overseers, and shepherds all refer to the same group of men. These men are to provide the spiritual leadership and oversight for the local church. We were blessed on Sunday the 17th of April to appoint four men to join the six who were already serving. The new men are Don Dew, Scott Gary, Lawrence Kelley and Ken Marshall. We believe that the addition of these good men will be a great help to the work of the Lord at this place and we ask for everyone’s prayers in their behalf as they undertake to shepherd the flock of God at Lost River (1Peter 5:2).
